Steven Bergwijn opens up on leaving Tottenham for Ajax

Steven Bergwijn has this weekend opened up on his decision to depart Tottenham Hotspur and the Premier League, for a return to his home country.

The long-running saga surrounding the future of wide-man Bergwijn was of course brought to a definitive close this past Friday.

This came as the Dutch international opted to call time on what proved an altogether underwhelming stint in north London, to link up with Eredivisie champions AFC Ajax.

The deal, it is understood, set Ajax back a sum in the region of €30 million, with Bergwijn having put pen to paper on a long-term deal in Amsterdam.

Speaking to the official website of his new club this weekend, it therefore came as little surprise when the 24-year-old was drawn on the motivation behind his latest move.

And Bergwijn first went on to reveal that he was left altogether surprised by the transfer coming to fruition:

“I was a bit shocked. I didn’t see it coming, actually.”

From here, the Dutch international pointed towards a lack of game-time at Spurs as a contributing factor in his decision to seek pastures new, before suggesting that, based on both domestic and European pedigree, Ajax represent a ‘step up’:

“But yeah I was getting left out of the team there and of course you just want to play. So if you can go back to Ajax it’s quite tempting. They always do well in the league and the Champions League. So, it’s a step up for me.”
